CVE-2018-19857
CriticalCVSS 9.1Exploitation Probability (EPSS)
Very high risk90th percentile - higher than 90% of all known CVEs
Summary
The CAF demuxer in modules/demux/caf.c in VideoLAN VLC media player 3.0.4 may read memory from an uninitialized pointer when processing magic cookies in CAF files, because a ReadKukiChunk() cast converts a return value to an unsigned int even if that value is negative. This could result in a denial of service and/or a potential infoleak.
Risk Assessment
An attacker can supply a specially crafted CAF file to cause an application crash or leak data from memory. The risk affects users who play untrusted media files with a vulnerable version of VLC.
Recommendation
Update VideoLAN VLC media player to a version later than 3.0.4 that contains the fix for CVE-2018-19857. Until the update, avoid opening untrusted CAF files.
