CVE-2017-17426

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

The malloc function in the GNU C Library (glibc or libc6) version 2.26 could return a memory block that is too small when attempting to allocate an object whose size is close to SIZE_MAX, potentially leading to a heap overflow.

Risk Assessment

Heap overflow may allow an attacker to execute malicious code or gain access to sensitive data, posing a serious security threat to applications and systems.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update the glibc library to the latest version to mitigate this vulnerability and conduct a code audit to identify potential heap overflow risks.

Original NVD description (English source)

The malloc function in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.26 could return a memory block that is too small if an attempt is made to allocate an object whose size is close to SIZE_MAX, potentially leading to a subsequent heap overflow. This occurs because the per-thread cache (aka tcache) feature enables a code path that lacks an integer overflow check.
