CVE-2017-12188

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

In the Linux kernel up to version 4.13.5, there is an issue with nested virtualization that improperly traverses guest pagetable entries, allowing L1 guest OS users to execute arbitrary code on the host or cause a denial of service.

Risk Assessment

This vulnerability can lead to serious consequences, such as unauthorized code execution on the host or host OS crashes, threatening the integrity and availability of organizational resources.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update the Linux kernel to a version that includes fixes for this vulnerability to minimize risks associated with nested virtualization.

Original NVD description (English source)

arch/x86/kvm/mmu.c in the Linux kernel through 4.13.5, when nested virtualisation is used, does not properly traverse guest pagetable entries to resolve a guest virtual address, which allows L1 guest OS users to execute arbitrary code on the host OS or cause a denial of service (incorrect index during page walking, and host OS crash), aka an "MMU potential stack buffer overrun."
