CVE-2016-3672

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

The arch_pick_mmap_layout function in the Linux kernel up to version 4.5.2 does not properly randomize the legacy base address, making it easier for local users to bypass restrictions on the ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE flag and the ASLR protection mechanism for setuid or setgid programs.

Risk Assessment

Local users may gain unauthorized access to memory, potentially leading to the execution of malicious code in the context of privileged programs.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update the Linux kernel to version 4.5.2 or later to patch this vulnerability and implement additional security measures to restrict access to setuid and setgid programs.

Original NVD description (English source)

The arch_pick_mmap_layout function in arch/x86/mm/mmap.c in the Linux kernel through 4.5.2 does not properly randomize the legacy base address, which makes it easier for local users to defeat the intended restrictions on the ADDR_NO_RANDOMIZE flag, and bypass the ASLR protection mechanism for a setuid or setgid program, by disabling stack-consumption resource limits.
