CVE-2016-1714

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

The fw_cfg_write and fw_cfg_read functions in QEMU before version 2.4, when built with Firmware Configuration device emulation support, allow guest OS users with CAP_SYS_RAWIO privileges to cause denial of service or potentially execute arbitrary code via an invalid current entry value in firmware configuration.

Risk Assessment

The organization may be exposed to attacks that lead to process crashes or unauthorized code execution, potentially resulting in loss of system or data availability.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update QEMU to version 2.4 or later and to restrict access to CAP_SYS_RAWIO privileges for guest OS users.
