CVE-2014-3534

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

The Linux kernel before version 3.15.8 on the s390 platform has a vulnerability that improperly restricts address-space control operations in PTRACE_POKEUSR_AREA requests. This allows local users to gain read and write access to kernel memory, potentially leading to privilege escalation.

Risk Assessment

This vulnerability poses a security risk as local users can exploit it to escalate privileges and access sensitive data in kernel memory.

Recommendation

It is recommended to update the Linux kernel to version 3.15.8 or later to mitigate this vulnerability and to restrict system access for unauthorized users.

arch/s390/kernel/ptrace.c in the Linux kernel before 3.15.8 on the s390 platform does not properly restrict address-space control operations in PTRACE_POKEUSR_AREA requests, which allows local users to obtain read and write access to kernel memory locations, and consequently gain privileges, via a crafted application that makes a ptrace system call.
