CVE-2009-2730

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

The vulnerability in libgnutls in GnuTLS before version 2.8.2 improperly handles a null character ('\0') in a domain name in the Common Name (CN) or Subject Alternative Name (SAN) field of an X.509 certificate. This allows a man-in-the-middle attacker to spoof arbitrary SSL servers using a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority.

Risk Assessment

The organization is exposed to man-in-the-middle attacks that can lead to interception of sensitive data, such as passwords or financial information, by impersonating trusted SSL servers.

Recommendation

Immediately update the GnuTLS library to version 2.8.2 or later, which includes a fix for this vulnerability.
