CVE-2006-4272

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

Jelsoft vBulletin 3.5.4 allows remote attackers to register multiple arbitrary users by sending a large number of requests to register.php, leading to resource consumption and denial of service. The vendor disputed this vulnerability, stating that with CAPTCHA enabled registrations won't go through and that flooding should be handled at the server level.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can mass-register accounts, causing server overload and making the service unavailable to legitimate users. The risk affects organizations using vBulletin 3.5.4 without additional protections against automated registrations.

Recommendation

Enable CAPTCHA in the registration process and consider implementing server-level restrictions (e.g., rate limiting) for requests to register.php. Upgrading to a newer version of vBulletin is also recommended if available.
