Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

An integer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft Word (versions 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 for Mac, and v.X for Mac) allows remote user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted string in a Word document. The overflow of a 16-bit integer length value leads to code execution, also known as 'Memmove Code Execution'.

Risk Assessment

A user opening a malicious Word document could allow an attacker to take control of the system, leading to data theft, malware installation, or further compromise within the organization.

Recommendation

Apply the available security updates for Microsoft Office as soon as possible, and until then avoid opening Word documents from untrusted sources.
