CVE-2006-2548

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A vulnerability in Prodder and perlpodder before version 0.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by injecting shell metacharacters into the podcast URL (url attribute of an enclosure tag or $enc_url variable). When wget is run, the metacharacters are interpreted by the shell, leading to command execution.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can take control of the server or workstation running the vulnerable software, potentially leading to data theft, malware installation, or further attacks on the internal network.

Recommendation

Immediately update Prodder and perlpodder to version 0.5 or later, which includes a fix for this vulnerability. If an update is not possible, restrict access to the program and avoid processing untrusted RSS/Atom feeds.
