CVE-2006-0987

Medium
Published: Updated: Translated: NVD NIST

Exploitation Probability (EPSS)

Very high risk
58.03%

99th percentile - higher than 99% of all known CVEs

Summary

The default configuration of ISC BIND before 9.4.1-P1, when configured as a caching name server, allows recursive queries and provides additional delegation information to arbitrary IP addresses. This allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (traffic amplification) via DNS queries with spoofed source IP addresses.

Risk Assessment

Attackers can use the DNS server for traffic amplification and launch a DDoS attack against a victim, causing link congestion and service unavailability. The organization may become an unwitting participant in the attack, potentially resulting in its IP addresses being blocked.

Recommendation

Disable recursion for external clients or restrict it to trusted networks using access control lists (ACLs). Update ISC BIND to version 9.4.1-P1 or later.
