CVE-2005-4048

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A heap-based buffer overflow in the avcodec_default_get_buffer function (utils.c) in FFmpeg libavcodec 0.4.9-pre1 and earlier, as used in products such as MPlayer, xine-lib, Xmovie, and GStreamer, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via small PNG images with palettes.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can remotely execute arbitrary code on the target system by crafting a malicious PNG file. Applications using the vulnerable library, including MPlayer, xine-lib, Xmovie, and GStreamer, are at risk.

Recommendation

Update FFmpeg/libavcodec to a version newer than 0.4.9-pre1 immediately. If an update is not possible, restrict processing of untrusted PNG files or apply temporary network-level mitigations.
