Format string vulnerability in the bpjava-msvc daemon (Java user interface service) in VERITAS NetBackup Data and Business Center 4.5FP and 4.5MP, and NetBackup Enterprise/Server/Client 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0. A remote attacker can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code by sending a specially crafted COMMAND_LOGON_TO_MSERVER command.
Risk Assessment
The risk to the organization is the possibility of remote takeover of the NetBackup system without authorization, which could compromise the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of backup data and the entire backup infrastructure.
Recommendation
It is recommended to immediately apply security patches provided by the vendor (Symantec/Vertias) for all affected NetBackup versions. Also restrict access to ports used by the bpjava-msvc daemon to trusted hosts only.
