CVE-2005-0403

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A vulnerability in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 kernel, in the init_dev function in tty_io.c, results from improper clearing of controlling ttys in multi-threaded applications. A local user can exploit this flaw to cause a system crash (denial of service) and potentially gain tty access through attacks that trigger a pointer to a freed structure.

Risk Assessment

The risk includes local denial of service (system crash) and unauthorized tty access, which could lead to privilege escalation or session hijacking.

Recommendation

It is recommended to immediately update Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 to the latest kernel version containing the fix for CVE-2005-0403. If updating is not possible, restrict local access to the system to trusted users only.

Original NVD description (English source)

init_dev in tty_io.c in the Red Hat backport of NPTL to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 does not properly clear controlling tty's in multi-threaded applications, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly gain tty access via unknown attack vectors that trigger an access of a pointer to a freed structure.
