CVE-2005-0198

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A logic error in the CRAM-MD5 code of the UW-IMAP server, when CRAM-MD5 is enabled, does not properly enforce all required conditions for successful authentication, allowing remote attackers to authenticate as arbitrary users.

Risk Assessment

An attacker can gain unauthorized access to all users' mail accounts, leading to confidentiality and integrity breaches.

Recommendation

Immediately disable CRAM-MD5 in the UW-IMAP server or apply the vendor patch. If possible, migrate to more secure authentication methods such as GSSAPI or TLS with certificates.
