CVE-2004-1379

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

A heap-based buffer overflow in the DVD subpicture decoder of xine-lib 1-rc5 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a specially crafted DVD or MPEG subpicture header where the second field reuses RLE data from the end of the first field.

Risk Assessment

The risk for organizations is remote code execution without authentication, potentially leading to system compromise, data theft, or lateral movement within the network.

Recommendation

Update xine-lib to a version later than 1-rc5 immediately. If updating is not possible, restrict access to applications using xine-lib and avoid playing untrusted DVD or MPEG files.
