CVE-2001-0497

High
Published: Translated: NVD NIST

Summary

The dnskeygen tool in BIND 8.2.4 and earlier, and dnssec-keygen in BIND 9.1.2 and earlier, set insecure permissions for an HMAC-MD5 shared secret key file used for DNS Transactional Signatures (TSIG). This allows attackers to obtain the keys and perform dynamic DNS updates.

Risk Assessment

Organizations may be exposed to unauthorized DNS updates, potentially leading to domain hijacking and control over other network resources.

Recommendation

It is recommended to upgrade to the latest version of BIND to eliminate insecure permissions and secure key files from unauthorized access.
